Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Add water and salt to the NINJA Foodie Deluxe. Wash and pat dry potatoes. Add potatoes to the NINJA basket, and place in the pot (see #1 and #2 in Notes section for Instant Pot details).
  2. Place pressure lid on NINJA Cooker and turn pressure release valve to “VENT” (or Venting setting) position. Press “FUNCTION” and then turn the dial to “STEAM.” Press “TIME” and set for 10 minutes. Press “Start/Stop” dial to begin cooking. Water will heat up, and once it reaches a boil, it will begin steaming.
  3. When cooking is complete, the pot will beep and automatically switch to “Keep Warm” mode. Steam will release, and the silver float valve will still be up. Once steam has fully released, the silver float valve will drop on the NINJA. Before opening the lid, make sure the silver float valve has dropped completely (you will hear it plop down). Test for doneness with the tip of a small sharp knife. If done, carefully remove the basket, and transfer to a serving dish. Serve immediately.

PREPARATION

Organize all your tools and ingredients before you begin. Getting all your ingredients in one place at the beginning will shorten your prep time.

INSTANT POT vs. NINJA FOODI DELUXE

Note: The recipe instructions are for an 8-quart Ninja Foodi Deluxe Tendercrisp Pressure Cooker FD400 Series. This recipe can also be made with a 6-quart Instant Pot Duo, as well.

6-quart Instant Pot cooking instructions will be provided in a “note” at the bottom of each step, if different than the Ninja Foodi Deluxe Cooker instructions.

STEP 1

a) Add 1 ½ cup water (see Note below) to the Ninja Foodi Deluxe. Then add ½ teaspoon kosher salt to the water.

b) Wash 24 ounces creamer potatoes (petit gold, yukon gold, baby red) well and pat dry. Add washed potatoes to the basket.

c) Place basket in the pot.

Note: Amount of water depends on your machine instructions for STEAM setting. General rule of thumb is 1 cup water to 1 pound of potatoes, unless your machine instructions say otherwise. We love this Pyrex measuring cup!

Instant Pot Cooking Instructions - For 6-quart Instant Pot, add 1 to 1 ½ cups water to pot. Add ½ teaspoon kosher salt to the water. Then set the trivet in the pot (for the Ninja pot, no trivet is needed). Add potatoes to the basket and place basket on top of the trivet.

STEP 2

a) Place pressure lid on Ninja and turn pressure release valve to the “VENT” position.

b) Press “FUNCTION” and then turn dial to “STEAM.” Press “TIME” and set for 10 minutes (turn dial to increase or decrease time, as needed). Press “Start/Stop” to begin cooking.

c) It will take a minute or so to heat up the water.

d) Once it reaches a boil, it will begin steaming.

Instant Pot Cooking Instructions - Place pressure lid on Instant Pot and set pressure release valve and settings according to Steam instructions for your Instant Pot/Cooker for baby or small whole potatoes. Press “Steam” then set time for 10 minutes (or the time according to your cooker model instructions). Then press “Pressure Cook.”

STEP 3

a) When cooking is completed, the pot will beep and automatically switch to “Keep Warm” mode. Steam will release a bit more and the silver float valve will still be up.

b) Once steam has fully released, the silver float valve will drop on the Ninja. Before opening the lid, make sure the silver float valve has dropped completely (you will hear it plop down).

c) Once the valve has dropped, then open the lid and test for doneness by inserting the tip of a sharp knife into one of the larger potatoes. It should glide in like butter. If done, then carefully remove basket. If not, close lid and set time for another 1-2 minutes.

Instant Pot Cooking Instructions - a) When cooking is completed, the pot will beep. b) Turn the valve to “Venting” position to do a quick release. Your Instant Pot should now be on “Keep Warm” mode. b) The pin will drop on the Instant Pot. Once it drops, you can open the lid. c) Test for doneness.

INSTANT POT STEAMED POTATOES - Tutorial - How to get perfectly cooked every time!

Blog Comments & Tips

Perfectly cooked potatoes every time!

You are probably thinking, what’s the big deal about steamed potatoes? If they are perfectly cooked, these little gems are deliciously creamy, and pretty much go with everything! We used baby gold potatoes, which have a smooth buttery taste and feel to them, even without the butter. I have used these little creamer potatoes as a base for so many other recipes. One of my favorites is our Potato Tacos (Tacos de Papa). Our Instant Pot Steamed Potatoes are also a great base for smashed potatoes, another favorite of mine.

Some may disagree with me, but carbohydrates are not the enemy. In moderation, they provide a delicious balance to your meal and a variety of nutrients. Both the skin and the flesh of these creamer potatoes are full of  antioxidants and minerals, including Vitamin C, iron, and a huge boost of potassium.

Did you know that these little potatoes have more potassium than a banana?!

Steamed potatoes are so versatile, and can be used for so many dishes. They soak up the sauce in stews, and are a wonderful accompaniment to my all time favorite refined stew - Boeuf Bourguignon! If these aren’t reasons enough to incorporate these little babies into your next meal, I don’t know what is!

Take a look below at some tips for making these potatoes a success.

Our 4 tips to making these steamed potatoes:

  1. Whichever brand of Instant Pot or Cooker you use, follow the instructions for your model for steaming.

  2. Use fresh potatoes and make sure your potatoes are firm. They shouldn’t have any give.

  3. Steaming retains most of the nutrients, unlike boiling.

  4. Salt your water! It’s surprising, but the steam really does flavor the potatoes beautifully.

Footnote: Remember to defer to the Steam instructions and cooking time for your specific cooker. Every Instant Pot or Cooker will vary based on brand and model, so it’s important to follow the instructions for your machine.
