NUTTY INDOOR S’MORES

This quick and easy dessert has a special twist from traditional s’mores. Pillowy marshmallows combine with my Homemade Nutella and roasted hazelnuts to give them that extra bit of crunch & flavor. This 4 ingredient recipe takes less than 10 minutes to make, and can easily be made gluten-free and vegan!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Place oven rack in the center of your oven, and preheat oven broiler to 500°F. Line a small baking sheet pan (9 x 13 inches) with foil, and set aside.
  2. Using a sharp knife, halve marshmallows lengthwise, and set aside. Then roughly chop roasted & unsalted hazelnuts (optional), and set aside. Break in half 4 sheets of Graham crackers, so you have 8 squares.
  3. Spread refrigerated Homemade Nutella onto the center of each Graham cracker square (dividing about one scant teaspoon per square). Place each square (chocolate side up) onto the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Place each marshmallow split side down so they lay flat onto 4 chocolate covered Grahams (2 marshmallow halves on each Graham cracker). Sprinkle chopped hazelnuts on the remaining 4 chocolate covered Grahams. Broil for about 1 minute (see Note #2), until the tops of the marshmallows are puffy and golden brown.
  5. Remove promptly from the oven, and place each marshmallow cracker onto each hazelnut cracker to create a sandwich. Serve immediately, and enjoy while still warm (CAUTION: they may be hot)!

Notes

  1. It’s important to refrigerate Homemade Nutella before using it in this recipe, otherwise it will melt off of the graham crackers. If you don’t have time to make my Homemade Nutella recipe, you can always substitute with 2.5 - 3 ounces of dark chocolate (we recommend using two 1.65 ounce bars of Trader Joe’s 72% cacao dark chocolate bars, or one 2.46 ounce Valrhona 70% cacao dark chocolate bar (or 71% cacao). For a more traditional taste, just select your favorite semi-sweet or milk chocolate bars instead.
  2. Depending on your oven (conventional or toaster oven), the broiling process will take more or less than 1 minute. Stay by your oven the entire time, as the browning process will happen instantly. It’s easy to burn these s’mores, so keep a close eye on that oven!
  3. For recipe variations (including vegan s’mores), visit the Pimp My Recipe section in the Blog Comments & Tips for this recipe on my website.
  4. Makes 4 servings (1 s’mores sandwich each).

Step by Step Instructions

PREPARATION

Organize all your tools and ingredients before you begin. Getting all your ingredients in one place at the beginning will shorten your prep time.

Nutty Indoor S'mores foil lined baking sheet, sitting on a white marble counter.

STEP 1

Place oven rack in the center of your oven, and preheat oven broiler to 500°F. Line a small baking sheet pan (9 x 13 inches) with foil, and set aside.

STEP 2a

Break in half 4 sheets of honey graham crackers (or gluten-free Graham crackers), so you have 8 squares.

STEP 2b

Using a sharp knife, halve lengthwise 4 large marshmallows, and set aside. Then roughly chop 1 tablespoon roasted & unsalted hazelnuts (optional), and set aside.

STEP 3

Spread 2 ½ tablespoons of refrigerated Homemade Nutella (see Note #1), dividing evenly among Graham cracker squares (about one scant teaspoon per square). Only spread chocolate on the center of each cracker (not to the edges). Place each Graham cracker square (chocolate side up) onto the prepared baking sheet.

Note: It’s important to refrigerate our Homemade Nutella before using it in this recipe, otherwise it will melt off of the graham crackers. If you don’t have time to make our Homemade Nutella recipe, you can always substitute with 2.5 - 3 ounces of dark chocolate (we recommend using two 1.65 ounce bars of Trader Joe’s 72% cacao dark chocolate bars, or one 2.46 ounce Valrhona 70% cacao dark chocolate bar (or 71% cacao). For a more traditional taste, just select your favorite semi-sweet or milk chocolate bars instead.

STEP 4a

Sprinkle chopped hazelnuts on only 4 chocolate covered Grahams. Place each marshmallow split side down so they lay flat, on the remaining 4 chocolate covered Grahams (2 marshmallow halves per Graham cracker).

STEP 5

Broil for about 1 minute (see Note below), until the tops of the marshmallows are puffy and golden brown. Remove promptly from the oven, and place each marshmallow cracker onto each hazelnut cracker (nuts should be on the bottom) to create a sandwich.

Note: Depending on your oven, the broiling process will take more or less than 1 minute. Stay by your oven the entire time, as the browning process will happen instantly. It’s easy to burn these s’mores, so keep a close eye on that oven!

SERVING SUGGESTIONS

Serve immediately, and enjoy while still warm (CAUTION: they may be hot)!

How to Make these Extra Special Nutty Indoor S’mores!

Blog Comments & Tips

A Special Twist on a Traditional Recipe!

What is the quintessential American dessert that comes to mind when you think of summer campfires? It’s S’mores, of course!  When the weather starts to cool down and you start missing summer campfires, our Nutty Indoor S’mores are the perfect fix. This 4 ingredient recipe takes less than 10 minutes to make, and can easily be made gluten-free!

I used traditional S’mores ingredients like graham crackers and marshmallows, but gave it an extra special twist. Replacing the milk chocolate bar with our Homemade Nutella, and topping it with roasted hazelnuts gives our Nutty Indoor S’mores that extra bit of crunch & flavor. When you are craving this summer treat, this recipe is as quick and easy as it gets. Just one minute under your oven broiler produces perfectly toasted marshmallows and gooey chocolate!

This recipe can easily be made gluten-free and dairy free. Visit the Pimp My Recipe section below for recipe variations. To help you make this recipe, here are a few simple tricks to making our Nutty Indoor S’mores.

Now you have the recipe, ingredients, and equipment, but how do you ensure the best results from our recipe?

Our 6 tips to making perfect Nutty Indoor S’mores:

  1. Use your favorite brand of graham crackers (I prefer Honey Maid Honey Grahams), and make sure they are fresh.

  2. Use large jet-puffed marshmallows.

  3. This recipe just isn’t the same without our Homemade Nutella. It elevates a good summer dessert into something extra special. It’s important that it’s refrigerated and to work quickly, so it won’t melt off the crackers.

  4. Don’t skip the unsalted roasted hazelnuts. They make a huge difference in the texture and flavor profile.

  5. Layer and assemble in the order suggested, so the hazelnuts get warm and toasted, and the chocolate doesn’t melt over the sides.

  6. Stay by your oven when broiling, and don’t be tempted to walk away! The marshmallows don’t take long to brown. And, they take only 1-2 seconds to go from golden to burnt.

Have any dietary preferences that won’t quite work with our recipe? It’s time to customize and Pimp My Recipe.

Pimp My Recipe:

  • Make it Mexican Chocolate: Spread the refrigerated Homemade Nutella onto the crackers, and top with a smidgen of ground cinnamon.

  • Make it Spicy Mexican Chocolate: Spread the refrigerated Homemade Nutella onto the crackers, and top with a smidgen of ground cinnamon and cayenne pepper.

  • Don’t Like Nuts? Omit the chopped hazelnuts.

  • Don’t Have Time to Make Homemade Nutella? We do not recommend using store bought, as it is quite oily and runny (and uses palm oil instead of the healthier coconut oil we used in our Homemade Nutella recipe). Instead, substitute with 2.5 - 3 ounces of dark chocolate (we recommend using two 1.65 ounce bars of Trader Joe’s 72% cacao dark chocolate bars, or one 2.46 ounce Valrhona 70% cacao dark chocolate bar (or 71% cacao).

  • Don’t Like Dark Chocolate?  For a more traditional taste, just select your favorite semi-sweet or milk chocolate bars instead of our Homemade Nutella.

  • Make it Gluten Free: Replace the regular graham crackers with gluten-free graham crackers. Also, be sure to double check the brand label of your chocolate and marshmallows to ensure they are gluten-free. Some brands are not.

  • Make it Dairy Free: Many 70% to 72% dark chocolate brands are dairy-free. Our Homemade Nutella uses a dairy free; however, we recommend checking the brand label of your chocolate to ensure it is dairy-free. Some brands are not.

  • Make it Vegan: Make sure to use a vegan dark chocolate when making our Homemade Nutella recipe. Then use a brand of vegan marshmallows, like Dandies vanilla marshmallows, and a brand of vegan graham crackers, like Nabisco grahams original.

Footnote: Remember to refrigerate our Homemade Nutella before spreading it onto the graham crackers, and work quickly so it doesn’t melt!
